Summary of events
On Friday afternoon we received reports from several sites advising they were offline. Investigations pointed to a connection known as handover failing. This aggregates end connections and hands them over to the network core.
Checking commenced starting with confirming internal systems and connections were intact and working. Optics were swapped to eliminate then as the cause. With this background information established the matter was escalated to Chorus for investigation. Again proving of equipment and optics took place from the Chorus exchange end. Technicians were then despatched to conduct end-to-end troubleshooting.
Technicians worked into Friday evening, resolving the fault at approximately 8:30pm Difficulty was encountered isolating the fault and then getting resolution. This added to the time taken to get resolution. A followup review of the event is underway, and we may post further on this page.
During the outage Earthlight kept affected sites informed based on what information we had. Clients with Earthlight Voice services were rerouted. Mobile backup is also available to keep sites online for data.
While outages are infrequent they can and will happen.
Earthlight has options for greater resiliency depending on client needs. With the addition of Mobile services, we are readying another product which will be released in the coming weeks.
