UFB Handover Issues
Friday 6 July 11:45 - 12:45
Summary of events
A core network service began to fail. This resulted in UFB Fibre connections handing over in Otago being affected. Earthlight and others were affected by this upstream equipment failing. The matter was resolved by restarting the core network switch upon which these services flow. Our apologies for any disruption this may have caused.
Further Details
As the event began with only some connections it was intiially viewed as being relatively isolated; pole replacement work, power. However the matter grew and indications pointed to a more serious issue developing. A restart was decided, which in turn affected other still-operational services which traverse that hardware element.
The reboot action had a ripple effect on network traffic and routing processes. It took approximately 10 minutes for everything to recover and network staff continued to keep watch over network operations.
The network element at the centre of this is due to be replaced in the coming weeks as part of a wider core-network update that is underway.
Please get in touch if you need any further information. We are also reviewing the event to ensure people can be best informed.
** Update 19 July - The element which needed restarting has been performing okay since. It is scheduled to be replaced in the coming weeks. We will notify when this takes place.
